General Questions
What is the difference between an acoustic piano and a digital piano?
Acoustic pianos produce sound when the hammers strike the strings. They work without electricity. A digital piano samples sounds and replicates the sounds electronically.
How long does it take to learn the piano?
It depends on you!
Some people take about 6 months to learn the basics. However, to master the piano will take several years of constant playing and practicing.
Where should I place my piano?
The piano should be placed against an inside wall whenever possible.
Advantages:
- More stable temperature
- Less exposure to humidity changes
- Reduced risk of warping and tuning issues
- Safer from direct sunlight
Best Placement Tips
- Keep the piano away from windows and doors to avoid a draft
- Avoid heaters, air conditioners, and fireplaces
- Use curtains or blinds if near sunlight
How can I make my piano last longer?
- Tune regularly
- Keep it in a stable environment
- Schedule professional servicing
- Avoid placing objects on it
Piano Tuning
Can I tune my piano myself?
Itβs not recommended. Piano tuning requires:
- Specialized tools
- A trained ear
- Knowledge of string tension
Incorrect tuning can cause damage to strings, tuning pins, cast iron frame, etc.
How often does a piano need tuning?
Acoustic pianos should be tuned at least once a year, but it depends on how often you play, and climate conditions.
What affects the tuning?
- Humidity changes
- Temperature fluctuations
- Heavy use
- Poor maintenance
Why does a piano need tuning?
Strings lose tension over time which causes the pitch to shift. Tuning the piano restores correct pitch. If there is a long period between tunings, then there first needs to be a pitch adjustment which is then followed by a final tuning 3-4 weeks later.
Why are some keys sticking or not working?
This could be caused by:
- Humidity changes
- Dust build-up
- Worn or misaligned parts
A technician should inspect and fix it.
Piano Maintenance
How often should my piano be serviced?
A full service (regulation) is typically needed every 2β5 years, but depends on how old the piano is and how often you play.
How do I clean my piano properly?
- Use a soft, dry microfibre cloth for keys and surfaces.
- Slightly damp cloth for stubborn dirt (avoid excess moisture)
- Avoid household cleaners like Mr Min
- Wash hands before playing
Can I move/transport my piano?
It is not advised. Pianos are heavy and sensitive instruments that can be badly damaged if transported incorrectly.
